The Utility of MELISA testing for metal allergy in patients requiring TMJ replacement

Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of Nickel allergy has variously been reported as occurring in30–40 % of patients awaiting tmj replacement, although it may be much higher in patients who have had previous implants (60 %). Allergy testing is recommended prior to TMJ replacement in the UK and where Nickel allergy exists alternate Titanium implants can be used. Patch testing is commonly used however this can produce lengthy delays and is costly. MELISA® Memory Lymphocyte Immunostimulation Assay is an in vitro test that detects Type IV cell mediated hypersensitivity.
