Abstract
The West became clearly distinctive in the nineteenth century as science became institutionalised at the state level. This chapter discusses utilitarianism and scientific attitudes in the nineteenth century. It describes the opposition to science and utilitarian views in the West from religious and conservative circles including intellectual and cultural spheres.
