Abstract
AN INAUGURAL LECTURE with this title delivered in the University of Leicester in November 1964 by F. W. J. Hemmings, Professor of French Literature, has now been published by Leicester University Press. It is a good lecture and reads well, and it must have been a delight to listen to with the added colouring of voice and the emphasis of intonation.
