Abstract

A psychotherapy case study of an ex-con who successfully went straight illustrates the usefulness of remorse. Genuine regret about criminal behavior led the patient to change his ability to relate, his ability to respond (responsibility), and his life style. Differences between neurotic guilt and remorse are discussed. Remorse is conceptualized as a quality which can effectively motivate change.
