Abstract

Fully grown Xenopus laevis oocytes dissected from ovaries are at a stationary state of meiotic prophase arrest. They can be triggered to enter meiosis by various agents such as progesterone, which acts through the outer membrane, or oncogenic ras protein, which acts upon injection. This process, the meiotic maturation of the oocyte that results in the breakdown of the nucleus or the germinal vesicle, is the essence of the biological assay for ras activity.
