Abstract

Attention is drawn to the need to specify the widest range of materials which will perform satisfactorily in motorway embankments. Reference is made to the different properties of fill material which are required in different parts of an embankment. A description is given of a trial embankment on the M6 motorway which showed that fill material much wetter than that normally permitted by current specifications could be safely incorporated in selected zones of the M6 motorway embankments if suitable drainage measures were provided. Attention is also drawn to the large financial savings which resulted from the use of wet fill on the Lancaster Penrith motorway and mention is made of the application of this technique to other works (TRRL)
