Abstract

The article deals with the place‐names, especially the hill‐names, in the western part of Hardangervidda. The basic research material contains some 4000 names. After giving a short topographical description of. the area in question, the author discusses the function of cairns. In his opinion, the name‐giving process has the same role as the cairns: identification and individualisation. The linguistic material for the hill‐names in the area consists of a comparatively high number of name elements, referring to different types of convex formations, such as heights, hills, peaks, etc. These elements are normally more closely defined by words which refer to various local circumstances, for instance vegetation, situation, usefulness. He concludes by stressing that the density and variety of the place‐names in the area show that through the ages people have exploited the resources, in particular by hunting, fishing and pasturing.
