Abstract

Two unicellular green algae, Chorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus bijugatus, isolated from soil, were evaluated for their use in the insecticide bioassay employing agar diffusion technique. The minimum detection limits for quinalphos, cypermethrin, fenvalerate, carbofuran and carbaryl, as evidenced by a clear zone around the diffusion source on algal lawn, were in the range of 2–4 μg while monocrotophos could be detected only at >20-μg levels. The results of the present assay are comparable to those of the other toxicity tests.
