Abstract

A one-year pilot study was conducted to determine whether a single annual application of 0.05 M H 3PO 4, followed by 1.2 per cent acidulated phosphate-fluoride, pH 3.2, would result in decreased caries experience when compared to the use of the same fluoride agent without prior etching. A significant difference in caries experience was observed in favour of subjects exposed to the mild etching procedure. The clinical findings were paralleled by biopsy results showing significantly higher enamel fluoride in children receiving the phosphoric acid pre-treatment.
