Abstract

A case report of family therapy with a 10-year-old encopretic boy is presented. The initial treatment plan is discussed in terms of structural goals and systemic change. When structural and systemic changes fail to occur, the family treatment team shifts its focus to symptomatic change through the use of hypnotic metaphor. Theoretical implications of the approach are discussed.
