Abstract

The general guidelines and recommendations for exercise prescription have been well documented (Astrand and Rodahl, 1977; Cureton, 1969; Kasch and Boyer, 1968; American College of Sports Medicine, 1978; Pollock, 1978). The guidelines recommended by most include: frequency of training, 3–5 days a week; intensity of training, 60–90% of maximum heart rate reserve (HR max reserve) or 50–85% of maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max); duration of training, 20–45 minutes; and mode of activity, aerobic activities such as running, walking, bicycling, swimming, cross-country skiing, vigorous dancing and various endurance sporting activities. These guidelines were designed to give the average participant the amount of stimulation necessary to develop and maintain an optimal level of cardiorespiratory endurance and body composition. It is suggested that a well-rounded program would also include conditioning of the major muscle groups and flexibility exercises.
