Abstract

The concept of the atomic form factor is used extensively by crystallographers. Despite its simplistic assumptions it has proved to be of great use for the solution of crystallographic problems. This article examines some of the strengths and weaknesses of the form factor formalism and compares results for beryllium with the results of band-theory calculations.
