Abstract
Current strategies for the achievement of ignition conditions in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) depend on a succession of weak shock waves to isentropically compress the fusion fuel. We propose a physical mechanism for utilization of strong shock waves to achieve isentropic compression, in which the shock wave functions both to compress the target and to change its equation of state. This mechanism should significantly improve the efficiency of ICF compression.
