Abstract

Nature and reference value of U.S. Government statistical data in published and machine-readable forms is discussed. Enumeration and sampling procedures as statistical measures, and the periodic censuses and selected current series as time series are explained. Geographical units commonly employed in the statistical series are defined, and the utility of classifications devised by national and international agencies to systematize the collection and comparison of data is demonstrated. Reference is made throughout to improvements recommended by the President's Commission on Federal Statistics. The second part relates how one can locate statistical data including the machine-readable tapes and notes the major guides to statistical information. Also included in this part are the summarizing compilations such as the yearbooks and some of the major government periodicals which report summary statistics.
