Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a highly widespread inflammatory skin disease affecting 5% to 20% of the population, associated with reduced quality of life, increased health care expenditures, and increased risk of developing other allergic diseases. The pathologic chain of phenomena in AD starts with (1) impaired skin barrier function, through (2) decreased bacterial diversity of the skin, and (3) susceptibility to skin infections (including Staphylococcus aureus predomination and colonization), toward (4) immune dysregulation.
