Abstract

Of all the endocrine preparations stimulating a more rapid growth of flesh and fat in rabbits, only insulin has been hitherto used. The injection of insulin stimulates the assimilation of carbohydrates and through them the formation of fat reserves. However, insulin is a costly preparation and, therefore, not suitable for mass application to animals. The present researches were instituted in a search for cheaper preparations which would produce the same effect. Two substances, prolan (Zondek) and gravidan (sterilized pregnancy urine) were used. After having independently worked out a method of preparing gravidan I found that 1 cc. of the substance contained 5–8 mouse-units of prolan and 1–3 mouse-units of folliculin. This was true if the urine had been taken within the first three months of pregnancy. Two years of careful study on the subject has led me to the conclusion that gravidan is entirely harmless for animals if administered in moderate dosage.
