Abstract

AbstractFive patients with recurrent high anorectal fistula, in which traditional methods had failed to give complete recovery, were successfully treated by a new technique consisting of partial excision of the fistula, insertion of PMMA beads (Septopal®) and primary closure of the wound, followed by gradual removal of the beads, beginning 7 days after operation and extending over at least 3 weeks (partly on an ambulatory basis). In all these patients, there was eventual complete healing of the problematic fistula. This safe, easily performed method is recommended as being a useful means for combating infection, making possible complete healing, and preventing future recurrence in similar challenging cases.
