Abstract

AbstractThe paper reviews the theories of photo-elasticity and shows how the technique can be applied to measuring the stresses in dynamically-loaded mechanisms. Since the technique is essentially an optical one, short exposure photography plays a very important part and some of the advantages and difficulties are described. To get improved accuracy, colour can be used but this Involves certain difficulties and increased cost. An alternative method has been developed which gives even better accuracy for a lower cost with other advantages.
