Abstract

Embryonated eggs of Heterakis gallinae, Blatella germanica, Artemia salina and Drosophila melanogaster were successfully rendered germfree by treatment with low concentrations of peracetic acid. Methods for growing the three free-living forms are described. Rigorous methods were employed to test for the absence of bacteria as well as PPLO and viruses. The viability of the eggs was not impaired, and no damage to the embryos by the disinfecting agent was observed. Peracetic acid shows promise in decontaminating a wide spectrum of parasite eggs for gnotobiotic studies.
