Abstract

Over the past several years, much has been written about on-line analyzers: their theory of operation, their design, and their accuracy as compared to laboratory techniques. However, very little information has appeared in literature regarding the application for these analyzers and the resulting economic benefits. Process Technology, Incorporated (PT1) has installed and commissioned several bulk coal analyzers and slurry analyzers for preparation plant related applications. As of the end of 1992, five of these slurry systems are being utilized in closed-loop control circuits in-plant. The circuits being run on automatic control using ash and density readings from the analyzers include heavy media vessel, concentrating table, cyclone, and froth flotation circuits. The tests have been conducted on these systems to determine, primarily, what incremental increase in yield is available when utilizing on-line ash analyzers and the performance of automatic control versus manual control of the circuits.
