Abstract

A number of series of ethoxylated and propoxylated non-ionic surfactants were evaluated for their ability to prevent the adhesion of Pseudomonas sp. strain NCMB 2021 (under static conditions) and S. marcescens strain NCIB 12211 (under flowing conditions) to hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces. Most of the linear ethoxylated surfactants had an anti-adhesive effect on hydrophobic but not hydrophilic surfaces. An investigation into the durability of the anti-adhesive effect showed that by surface adsorption, the propoxylated Procetyl series were far superior to any of the ethoxylated surfactants examined.
