Abstract

environment. The technique involves play with the child in an environment that can be structured by parents, teachers or therapists. The child engages in selfdetermined play or activity while the adult plays alongside, closely imitating and/or providing a language commentary which is linguistically and contextually appropriate. Non-directive play is based on developmental cognitive principles which relate directly to learning and should not be confused with non-directive counselling, which is a psychotherapeutic technique.
