Abstract
Botulism is a progressive neuroparalytic disease caused by a toxin elaborated by the bacillus Clostridium botulinum. This toxin is the most poisonous known to man. It is more than 275 times more poisonous than cyanide1 and 100,000 times more toxic than sarin2; as little as 0.001 μg/kg of this toxin will cause symptoms.3 Fortunately, despite its virulence, botulism is a rare occurrence, with fewer than 200 cases of all types (food-borne, inhalational, wound, and infant botulism) occurring annually in the United States.
