Abstract

The reaction of cesium atoms with hydrogen molecules is highly endoergic in the ground state (ƊH=2.7 eV) but can proceed after electronic excitation of Cs atoms to the 7P state : Cs(7P)+ H2 + CsH + H. In this case, the potential energy above threshold is drastically small : 0.0016 eV for a Cs (7P½) excitation and 0.024 eV for a Cs (7P3/2) excitation. This system at threshold is thus very attractive to study the influence upon reactivity of various parameters, if high resolution techniques are wed, both to prepare reagents and to characterize reaction products.
