Abstract

The use of I 2 as a reagent for the visualization of a number of narcotics and psychoactive drugs was found to be equivalent, or superior, to three of the commonly used visualization reagents with regard to sensitivity, expense, availability, and shelf life. Generally, I 2 was found to be a nondestructive reagent. The rate of visualization can be used as an aid in identification, yet allows a sequential series of other spray reagents to be used. In most cases, I 2 does not alter the migration of drugs examined so that subsequent two-dimensional chromatography may be performed, allowing further identification; or further in situ reaction chromatography may be employed if desired.
