Abstract
The use of epicyclic gear mechanisms as mechanical function generators for generating a controlled rectilinear motion is extended to include internally contacting gears. The design procedures for mechanisms using this type of gear train are developed. Although both internal and external contacting gear trains serve equally well for packages generating low-ordered harmonics, the packages containing internal gears must be used whenever higher ordered terms of the Fourier series are required in defining the function being generated.
