Abstract

Especially in old cities layers of infill or reworked soil sometimes attain considerable thicknesses. The mapping of infilled water courses and ditches, levelled military fortifications, former shafts or infilled sand, gravel or clay pits is no easy matter. Interpolation between point data obtained by borings and penetration tests usually does not provide a satisfactory result. In this case valuable information may be derived from a critical examination of historic town maps and plans. To be useful historic plans should meet these conditions: Historic plans have been used in compiling the maps of infill and reworked soils of the engineering geological atlases of the agglomerations of Ghent and Antwerp.
