Abstract

Histidase activtiy in the human fetal epidermis and amniotic cells was studied to establish an epidermal origin of amniotic cells. Whereas fetal skin contains histidase activity as early as 20 weeks' gestation, in amniotic cells histidase activity appeared only at term and, even then, there was a wide variability in specific activity levels. Significance of these results to amniotic cell origins and to the use of amniotic cells in prenatal diagnosis of histidinemia is discussed.
