Abstract

Abstract A fluorochrome method is described for the rapid detection of low densities of malaria parasites in peripheral blood films. The method depends on the high-intensity fluorescence of malaria parasites in thick blood films stained with acridine orange. This intensity allows the use of low magnification and permits rapid scanning of large areas. Specific diagnosis can be confirmed by subsequent staining of the same blood films with a conventional Giemsa stain.
