Abstract

Proficiency in the use of dimensional analysis to solve conversion problems can be attained by following the three steps illustrated in the example problems. In step 1, the units or dimensions of the answer, which are usually stated in the problem itself, are written on one side of an equation. In step 2, all of the numbers and associated units given in the problem are written as factors on the other side of the equation in such a way that, after cancellation of units, the dimensions on both sides of the equation are the same. Step 3 consists of performing the indicated arithmetic in the dimensionally correct equation.
