Abstract

The Geography Faculty's Cartography Department is in the process of setting up a computer system that includes devices for automated map compilation and analysis, cartographic-mathematical modeling, and the processing of aerial photographs and space imagery. The article describes the use of computers in conjunction with summer field practice in a topographic mapping course, and the problem of training instructors in computer use, with three levels of competence: (1) a course for novices; (2) a more advanced course for instructors who already have some knowledge of computers; (3) a more superficial familiarization course for senior faculty members who would not themselves make use of computers.
