Abstract

Computer programs developed by the Fatigue Research Group at the GKN Group Technological Centre for use in fatigue analysis are described. An outline is given of the underlying philosophies used to predict the fatigue life of components subjected to complex, variable-amplitude loading histories. Simple examples are used to demonstrate how the designer can evaluate, quickly and easily, the effects of changes in material, geometry and service loading history. A brief description is also given of plans to develop and extend the computer-based fatigue life prediction packages: particular consideration is given to the storage of condensed loading histories retaining sequence information and basic material data relating to cyclic stress/strain behaviour and fatigue performance.
