Abstract

Summary 1.The effect of Banthine upon the acidity of the gastric secretion and upon the acidity of the gastric contents has been studied in patients with duodenal ulcer. 2.Although a fall in acidity of the gastric secretion occurred after a single injection of the drug, four-hourly injections failed to produce a satisfactory reduction in the acidity of the gastric contents in fasting patients. This was attributed to the delay in gastric emptying, leading to the retention of previously secreted acid juice. 3.Four-hourly injections of Banthine prolonged the action of a single dose of alkali in 7 out of 10 patients. 4.A regime of oral Banthine and alkali each given four times during the 24 hours produced some reduction in the acidity of the fasting gastric contents as compared with alkali alone, in 3 out of 5 patients. 5.Previous work on the effect of the drug on gastric acidity is reviewed and the importance of the method used to assess this effect is emphasised.
