Abstract

The backfilling of worked out areas in the stopes of South African gold mines can effect improvements in environmental conditions. By sealing off large exposed areas of hot rock surface and eliminating leakages of ventilation air, backfill can be used to achieve substantial reductions in stope heat loads and improvements in air utilization efficiency. The effects of backfilling are significant on a mine-wide scale and can lead to savings in ventilation and refrigeration costs. These and other environmental considerations should be taken into account in an integrated design approach to the use of backfill in deep mines.
