Abstract

:The aim of this article is to critically examine the therapeutic use of art therapy as a way to facilitate communication, validation, self-expression and reminiscence with persons with dementia. The definition of dementia and the effects of dementia upon older adults is briefly reviewed. Current methods used to treat dementia suffers such as reality orientation, validation and reminiscence therapy are examined and the question of whether and how the use of art therapy can support these approaches is explored. Peer-reviewed research on art directives utilized with persons with dementia are reviewed with a focus upon the use of collage. Concerns related to the potential harm that art therapy might cause to this population are also reviewed.
