Abstract

Ear disease is a common problem in primary care veterinary practice. A clear understanding of the underlying causes of disease, the need to recognise and treat infection effectively and reverse chronic change to the canal, are key to resolving disease and preventing recurrence. Although infection is always secondary to an underlying cause in otitis, failure to treat infection effectively leads to the development and often worsening of chronic change within the ear canal, and an increased risk of recurrent infection. This article discussing the use of antibiotics and antimycotics in otitis is the fourth in a series that addresses some of the most common challenges faced in practice in the management of ear disease.
