Abstract

Anaerobic digester systems are becoming of increasingly greater interest to the practising farmer. Sometimes the gas so produced is used for generating electric power by means of an internal combustion engine. There is little experience to date on the use of small engines (as opposed to the very large units installed at some municipal seqage works). This paper attempts to answer some of the problems which may arise in the choice and operation of engines and help the plant manufacturer in his choice of engine system. The paper deals with gas properties, the choice of engine type, operation of spark ignition and diesel engines and the balancing of gas supply and power demand. Some preliminary pointers are given on the likely life of engines operating under these conditions.
