Abstract

ABSTRACT This project describes an action research project, which took place in a nursing school in Hong Kong, investigating how the concept of reflective practice can be applied to performance. The focus of the study was the assessment of the competency of second year student nurses performing various aspects of care using aseptic techniques. The action research highlighted how the concept of ‘competency’ was perceived by staff and students at the beginning of the researchand how it changed after the concept of reflective practice was introduced and reviewed during the research. As the research progressed, a reflective approach emerged which was found to be very effective in guiding practice. This was later refined into a model of reflective practice guiding teaching in the nursing school as well as in the clinical situation.
