Abstract
In August 1990, the United States National Science Foundation announced that it would provide support for the establishment of a new National High Magnetic Field Laboratory to be jointly operated by Florida State University, the University of Florida and Los Alamos National Laboratory. This new laboratory will develop continuous and pulsed magnet systems and the necessary research support infrastructure to meet the needs of the United States and foreign user communities at the highest attainable magnetic fields. In addition, the new laboratory will establish an in-house science and engineering program to further the development of magnet related research and technology. The continuous field facilities will be located in Tallahassee, Florida, with the pulsed facilities located at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico. Work has commenced on the development of this new laboratory.
