Abstract

The US invasion of Iraq essentially represents the military side of the US model of globalization. With its oil wealth and sizable educated population, Iraq could not be controlled through international financial institutions as easily as poorer or smaller countries in the developing world, so cruder forms of domination were required. The imposition of neoliberal economic policies by the US-run Coalition Provisional Authority during the early phases of the occupation and the US-led Constitutional framework making it difficult for Iraqis to overturn these initiatives subsequently has placed the once nationalistic Iraqi state firmly within the Washington consensus on trade and development.
