Abstract

In the present work the fine morphology and the distribution of the afferent synapses to the Mauthner cell of larvalSalamandra salamandra are described. The aim of the study is to characterize the synaptic bed in the larvae of this terrestrial salamander in order to compare it with that of larval axolotl and larval anurans. Four main types of afferent endings have been identified: myelinated club endings, roundvesicle end bulbs, flattened-vesicle end bulbs and spiral fibers endings, which probably correspond to afferent fibers of different origin. TheM-cell afferent synaptology of larval stages of terrestrial amphibians is quite similar to that previously observed in larval stages of aquatic species. This fact can be related to the fundamental similarities between the larval lifestyles.
