Abstract

A facile synthesis of ((8)annulene)uranium(IV) dichloride (1) has been developed via the reduction of cyclooctatetraene (COT) by UCl{sub 3} or through reaction of UCl{sub 4}, COT, and NaH. The activation parameters for the coordination of trimethylphosphine (PMe{sub 3}) to 1 in THF solution have been measured. The reactivity of 1 with several mono- and bidentate alkylmetal and alkoxymetal reagents is reported. Also reported are the crystal structures of bis(pyridine)((8)annulene)uranium(IV) dichloride, (C{sub 8}H{sub 8})UCl{sub 2}(NC{sub 5}H{sub 5}){sub 2} (3), and ((8)annulene)uranium(IV) bis(acetylacetonate), (C{sub 8}H{sub 8})U(CH{sub 3}COCHCOCH{sub 3}){sub 2} (4). Crystals of 3 are monoclinic P2{sub 1}/c, with a = 15.431 (3) {angstrom}, b = 7.744 (2) {angstrom}, c = 15.665 (3) {angstrom}, Z = 4, and R{sub F} = 2.8%. Crystals are 4 are monoclinic, P2{sub 1}/n, with a = 19.166 (4) {angstrom}, b = 10.312 (2) {angstrom}, c = 9.227 (2), Z = 4, and R{sub F} = 2.7%.
