Abstract

The paper contains results of theoretical investigations of the propagation of LF (low frequency electron waves, ω L < ω < ω H ) into the ionosphere from below. The solution of the wave equation for two models of electron concentration with different height variations [ N( z)] is given. It is shown that the energy flux turns quickly towards the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. For the chosen models the Poynting vector turns towards the magnetic field direction within a height range that lies between 1 and 20km, i.e. within 0–1 and 7 wavelengths. The extent of this range decreases rapidly with increase of the electron concentration gradient dN dz .
