Abstract

Publisher Summary The investigations of amino acid release and particularly uptake are numerous and these fields have been strongly influenced by a detailed knowledge of peripheral cholinergic and adrenergic systems. This chapter discussessome of these studies within the framework of the presynaptic criteria of neurotransmitter identification. Uptake and release represent two thoroughly studied presynaptic criteria for neurotransmitter identification. When used with the proper constraints, the observations of uptake and release can be useful for an evaluation of amino acid neurotransmission in the CNS. In terms of new vistas, the studies of uptake and release continue to be popular, both for transmitter identification and for the elucidation of membrane transport mechanisms.
