Abstract

The Kaliningrad earthquakes of September 21, 2004, were unpredicted and unprecedented in intensity. These features determine the necessity of a thorough search for the historical records on past strong seismic events in the region. Based on the discovered historical data, the paper analyzes the seismic activation at the beginning of the 14th century. The historical event is parameterized and compared with the 2004 Kaliningrad earthquakes. An attempt is made to estimate the seismic potential of the region and to clarify the main features of its long-term seismic regime.
