Abstract
The article examines the of the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs count de Vergennes as a hypothetical “savior of the monarchy” at the very beginning of the pre-revolutionary crisis of 1787—1788 in France. The author shows the features of Vergennes’ tactics as a statesman, considers his position and connections in the court society, his reputation. In the ministerial post, Vergennes showed outstanding professional qualities, but failed to win popularity in public opinion. The article is based on diplomatic correspondence, diaries and memorials of contemporaries.
