Abstract

Consideration is given to the unsteady motion of a sphere moving from rest under the action of a constant force in elastico-viscous liquids. Expressions are found for the velocity of the sphere; these can be evaluated for all values of the time and material constants involved. Information is provided which may be of use to experimentalists who use the falling-ball technique to determine the limiting zero shear rate viscosity of elastico-viscous liquids. Indications are also given of how this technique may be used to determine the elastic parameters of liquids.
