Abstract

The groundwater mound which develops below an irrigation ditch or leaky canal was investigated experimentally using a hydraulic sand-tank model and a Hele-Shaw analogue. The results showed that the mound built up in height at a rate proportional to the cuberoot of time and moved laterally at a rate proportional to the cube root of the time squared, as predicted from a solution of the Boussinesq equation, obtained numerically after using Barenblatt's transformation.
