Abstract

This article explores the reception of the European migrant crisis in Denmark and other Scandinavian countries. It departs from an analysis of the famous photograph by Michael Drost-Hansen that presented a refugee girl and a policeman. The picture won the title of best news photography of the year 2015 in Denmark. The author examines its modes of circulation and relation to the memory of Danish history. He demonstrates how the popularity of the photo is rooted in the "altruistic memory" of the Danish society, in particular in its heroism during the Nazi German occupation, when Danes were rescuing Jews and organised the White Bus operation. The author points out that the mechanisms of "altruistic memory" may cover the negative aspects of contemporary Danish migration policy.
