Abstract

In a period of declining real resources universities will have to devote more attention to their management structures. The management needs of those universities which wish to have a closer relationship with industry, commerce and the public sector are discussed and illustrated with reference to the changes which have occurred at the University of Salford since 1981. It is concluded that what is needed are not changes to the traditional arrangements but additional management structures to complement those traditional arrangements.
